The Nervous System Map

Five questions that show you why you react the way you do, and how to stop being run by it.

You know the moment. The fight ended an hour ago and your body is still buzzing with it. You are replaying every line, building your case, and somewhere underneath all that noise there is a feeling you cannot name.

Or it is later than that. You are lying in the same bed, backs turned, both of you replaying it, neither of you able to cross the six inches between you.

This page is for that moment. Not to fix it. To map it.

Where this came from

Malcolm

For about three years, I wrote in a journal every single night. I was in a 12-step program at the time, and one of the steps asks you to take a daily inventory. So every evening I would sit down and write two things: something I was grateful for, and something that had triggered me that day. What happened, how I felt, the sensations in my body, how I reacted.

I did not know it then, but I was not just journaling. I was mapping my nervous system.

After a while, the patterns started showing themselves. The same triggers. The same reactions. The same story underneath all of it, just in different flavors. And once I could see the pattern, I started catching the trigger earlier, in the sensation that came first, before the story ever took over. Slowly, I stopped being run by my reactions.

I have since turned that practice into the five questions below. I use them with every man and every couple I work with, and today they are yours.

walk it now

Bring one moment with you

A trigger from today, or the last fight, or the thing still sitting in your chest. It takes about two minutes. Notice the room getting lighter as you go. That is not decoration. That is the practice.

What am I feeling in my body?

Go to the raw sensation, not the interpretation.

where is it living

What is the emotion underneath?

Turn the wheel with your eyes and trust the one that lands, even if it surprises you.

Which state am I in?

It might be a blend. Choose up to two.

What is the story I am telling myself?

Notice it, because the same story tends to return.

or say it in your own words

What do I need right now?

One small thing. Not the whole answer.

The five questions, in full

Nothing above is held back and nothing here is either. This is the whole practice, yours whether we ever speak or not.

  1. What am I feeling in my body? Go to the raw sensation. The tightness, the heat, the pressure, the numbness. Where is it, and what is it like?
  2. What is the emotion underneath? If naming emotions is hard for you, look up the Wheel of Emotions and trust the one that lands.
  3. Which state am I in? Sympathetic, meaning activated, fight or flight. Dorsal, meaning shut down and numb. Or ventral, meaning grounded and connected. It might be a blend.
  4. What is the story I am telling myself? "She is going to leave." "I am not good enough." "I am a little boy being punished." Notice it, because the same story tends to return.
  5. What do I need right now? One small thing. Step outside and breathe. A hug. A moment of stillness. Or simply to be honest about what is really happening.

The point is not to fix anything. It is to feel it, name it, and choose your next move instead of being run by it. Write it by hand, not on your phone. There is something about the pen the screen cannot replicate.

if you are doing this alone

Answer the five after a trigger, or as a two-minute check-in at the start or end of your day. Use it for two weeks and see what changes, or use it for the rest of your life.

if you are doing this as a couple

Answer separately first, in your own notebooks, honestly. Then, when both nervous systems have settled, share your answers with each other. Not to defend your version. To let your partner see what was actually happening on your side of it.

You will never understand your partner until you understand that their reality is not the same as yours. This practice is how you start seeing it.

Keep the map

This works as a nightly practice, not a browser tab you lose.

Leave your email and I will send you the full map to keep, along with how each of the five questions goes deeper than it first appears. From there, I write twice a week about the same territory: shame, the mother complex, the father wound, and the nervous system underneath it all. Real teaching, drawn from the work itself. No noise, and you can leave whenever you want.

The map arrives from Malcolm at risewithmalcolm.com. Check spam the first time.

Whatever you do with this page, do one thing tonight. If you are on your own, walk the five questions once, by hand. If you are with your partner, walk them separately, then share one honest answer with each other.

That is how every man and every couple I have watched change actually started. Not with a breakthrough. With one honest entry on the map.

May this serve you well.
